dpkg

Table of Contents

Overview

It is the underlying software of the Debian package management system.

It is used to install, remove, and provide information about .deb packages.

It is a low-level tool, and advanced tools like APT do things such as getting complex package relationships and packages remotely.

Apptitude, Synaptic, etc. are much more popular than dpkg itself, because they have more ways to deal with package dependencies and have a more intuitive interface.
